Monts

During the Gallo Roman time, the territory of Monts was extended on two domains, on either side of the Indre. One of the domains was replaced by a priory and the other, on a slope dominating the river became a village tight around its Roman Church.
Still Nowadays, the ancient village is really picturesque with its small, windings streets on a slope, flanked with nice ancient houses.
It’s at the Castle of Candé, built in 1508 by François Briçonnet, that the former King of England Edward VIII did get married to Wallis Simpson in 1937…

> Château de Candé

(Near the viaduct)
The left section of the castle dates from 1508 and was built by François Briçonnet, Mayor of Tours. The right section is neo-Gothic in style and dates from 1864. On 3 June 1937 the castle was the venue for the marriage between the Duke of Windsor, the former King Edward VIII, and the American Wallis Simpson. It now belongs to the department of the Indre-et-Loire, and is open to the public (see museum and site). Tel: 02 47 34 03 70.

> Eglise Saint-Pierre-ès-Liens

This church was rebuilt in 1879, with the exception of the 12C chevet and Romanesque frescoes. Note also the frescoes dating from 1882 (Last Judgement), and the Lobin stained glass from 1887.

> Viaduct

Finished in 1851, this viaduct consists of 59 arches spanning the Indre Valley. In 1990 it was fitted with the longest points system in France as part of the Paris-Bordeaux TGV line.

> The old town

Monuments of note include a house dating from 1626, a 15C half-timbered house, a Renaissance-style door, and an old butcher's shop dating from the 1930s.
